IMAGES OF WOMEN
Modern & Contemporary Paintings, Drawings, Prints, and Sculpture
ONLINE CATALOGUE

Images of women comprise the theme of an exhibition of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture presented at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles. The exhibition of seventy-five works spanning from the late nineteenth century moderns to contemporary masters, opens on March 1, 2002.

While depictions of women have typically been the most prevalent subjects in western art as evocations of beauty, as well as the artist’s muse, this exhibition also incorporates noteworthy social statements. Among those are rare works by the late 19th century Dutch symbolist, Jan Toorop, with his powerful - “Work for Women,” of 1898 - among the earliest feminist statements in Modern Art; Ernst Barlach’s sculpture, “Russian Beggar Woman” of 1906; and Käthe Kollwitz’ masterpiece sculpture, “Pieta” of 1938.

Tom Wesselmann, "Smoker Study"

Among the artists represented in the exhibition are: Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Jan Toorop, Henri Fantin-Latour, Aristide Maillol, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Emil Nolde, George Grosz, Kathe Kollwitz, Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Georges Rouault, Alexander Archipenko, Gaston Lachaise, Joan Miro, Arshile Gorky, Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Zuniga, Henry Moore, Hans Burkhardt, Willem de Kooning, Patrick Graham, Louise Nevelson, Larry Rivers, Ruth Weisberg, Jerome Witkin, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Tom Wesselmann, and David Hockney.

April 6-May 31, 2002:
“DEVILS' PAGEANT”
Collaborative Exhibition of N.Y. Artist George Nama at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts April 6, 2002 features pianist/poet Alfred Brendel, also Performing at the Los Angeles Music Center
ONLINE CATALOGUE

Alfred Brendel is a world-famous pianist who is performing on the West Coast at the Los Angeles Music Center on April 5, as well as at the Irvine Barclay Theater in Orange County on April 7. He’s also a celebrated poet, whose latest work, “Devils Pageant,” depicts mischievous devils and the havoc they wreak. But the sly humor Brendel conveys in his poetry does not diminish his contemporary bite. His “Verso V,” for example, aptly anticipates current events in the corporate and political world: “When devils feel bored they play at being good / With pious faces hands neatly folded they sit round the boardroom table and forgive each other anything they ever did or might be itching to do / The first to dissolve in tears wins”

Brendel’s poetry, along with a series of etchings and sculpture by celebrated New York artist George Nama, serves as the basis of a collaborative art exhibition at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles which opens on April 6.

Inspired by his friend’s poetry, George Nama has created a series of light-hearted, yet charged etchings and bronze sculpture that The New York Times writer Grace Glueck had cited as having "achieved a life of its own [apart from Mr. Brendel's celebrated poetry]" in her rave review; while Art in America critic David Ebony labels the work “visual poetry.”

Brendel’s poems in German, along with their English translations, book-end the ten Nama etchings along with sculptures and drawings in this exhibition, titled “Devils Pageant/Von Teuflen.” These works anticipate a new body of works on which both artists are currently in collaboration, based upon the "Devils' Pageant" counterpart--Angels.

An opening reception, Saturday, April 6 from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. with George Nama and Alfred Brendel in attendance will feature a poetry reading by Mr. Brendel. In addition to the limited-edition artist’s book of original etchings and poetry signed by both artists, a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue will be available, with introductory essays by two world renowned poets, Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Simic and Academie Francaise member Yves Bonnefoy.

September 21 - December 22, 2001:
FRANCISCO ZUÑIGA: A MAJOR EXHIBITION OF SCULPTURE & SELECT WORKS ON PAPER
ONLINE CATALOGUE

Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles presents a formidable exhibition of works by the major 20th century sculptor from Mexico, Francisco Zuñiga (1912-1998), beginning September 21 and continuing through December 1, 2001. The most ambitious exhibition of Zuñiga works in the U.S. in more than a decade, this museum quality exhibition features important large and small scale sculpture, drawings, and selected original graphic works on paper.

The exhibition is accompanied by the recent publication of the authoritative book , "Francisco Zuñiga, A Catalogue Raisonne," documenting Zuñiga's complete body of work in sculpture. This much anticipated and indispensable reference is available during the exhibition.

"Soledad De Pie"

Born in Costa Rica, Zuñiga moved to Mexico in 1936 where his work increasingly gained wide recognition throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States. Notably, Zuñiga's importance was early realized in California, where his reputation and legions of collectors, both private and with museums, has been particularly formidable for decades. Monumental sculptures by Zuñiga can be found at entrances and sculpture gardens of important Southern California museums such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, UCLA Sculpture Gardens, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, and San Diego Museum of Art. Francisco Zuñiga's works are included in major museum collections internationally.

FRANCISCO ZUÑIGA: A MAJOR EXHIBITION OF SCULPTURE & SELECT WORKS ON PAPER is presented with the support of the Consulate General of Mexico, Fundación Zuñiga Laborde, A.C., Aeromexpress, and Mexicana Airlines.
