Jack Rutberg Fine Arts will present an exhibition of recent works by Los Angeles artist Ruth Weisberg entitled "Natural Histories" on February 6, which will extend through March 20, 1999. This exhibition will coincide with the College Art Association's National Conference which will take place in Los Angeles February 10 - 13. "Natural Histories" honors Ms. Weisberg, one of Los Angeles' most respected artists, and past president of the College Art Association.
Ruth Weisberg "Natural Histories" extends the artist's long held interests in preservation, extinction and survival. Her recent works reflect new elements inspired by her sojourns to the Natural History Museum in Vienna, leading Weisberg to create a hall of mirrors incorporating animals in a place of transformation and mystery. This exhibition also includes formative works integral to a major Ruth Weisberg exhibition that will be presented by the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in November 1999. That exhibition will feature Weisberg's drawings and monotypes inspired by Dante's Inferno.
Ruth Weisberg has exhibited and is represented in museum collections internationally. Among museums most recently acquiring works by Weisberg are The Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Museum of American Art and Instituto Nazionale per la Grafica, Rome, Italy.
Weisberg was honored with a Fulbright Grant to work in Italy in 1992, and was Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome in 1995 and in 1994, when she was featured in a solo exhibition at Temple University in Rome. In addition, Weisberg was awarded The National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship in 1994. Weisberg is currently Dean of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California.
Ruth Weisberg "Natural Histories" extends through March 20, 1999. Jack Rutberg Fine Arts is located at 357 N. La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm and Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm. For further information phone 323-938-5222.
